The artwork is intended to complement the entrance area of the historic Sears Building without interfering with it spacious, architecturally defined interiors. The suspended sculpture is a three-fold structure, composed of three stainless elements spiraling around the existing structural column of the stairwell. Stainless cables interconnect parts of the spirals and elements of the floor. The three “webs”ofcables “catch” an array of small-scale, artistically treated images representing the past, present and future of the developing neighborhood.
In addition to strips of colored and dichroic glass and images of plants and flowers, one also finds images of homes, and letters of different alphabets rendered in many styles, representing American diversity. Spiraling railing, designed to complement the railing of the main stairway, embraces the sculpture at the lower level. The proposed sculpture utilizes the entire height of the two-story space, and is highly visible from the main entrance of the first floor, as well as at Greenway Level.
