"Fruits of Knowledge"
The Dakota County Technical College

Inspired by the learning environment at the College these four suspended mobiles speak the same architectural language as the design for the newly renovated area, visually enriching and refining the atrium’s interior space.

They are constructed of stainless steel and glass, suspended at different heights, and positioned at various distances from the atrium windows, each mobile and the individual glass and metal components within them rotating at different speeds.

Visible from outside the building the sculptural ensemble serves as a focal point in the lobby, allowing visitors to see the sculptures from all angles.  Moving components, as well as reflections cast by the rotating glass, fill the space with vibrant and changing light reflecting the transformations of college life.

This changing light is generated by the use of dichroic glass, developed by NASA as a high-tech extension of the space industry.  Dichroic glass has the property of displaying more than one color, especially when moving or viewed from various angles.

The four mobiles form the letters D-C-T-C in abbreviation of the college name, and they embody the culture of learning, built on the foundation of respect for each individual. This elegant approach fully encompasses Dakota’s philosophy, and reflects on the College’s technical ingenuity, the four “letters” also suggesting three-dimensional animated technical drawings.
